About Oscos-Eo UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

The Oscos-Eo UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is situated in the border region between the autonomous communities of Galicia and Asturias in northwestern Spain. It spans approximately 64,000 hectares of mountainous terrain, lush river valleys, coastal stretches along the Cantabrian Sea, and extensive Atlantic forests. The reserve is named after the Oscos and Eo River regions, highlighting their ecological and cultural significance. This biodiverse territory hosts a variety of ecosystems including oak, chestnut, and beech forests, alongside typical coastal habitats offering refuge to many endangered species such as the Cantabrian capercaillie and the Iberian wolf.

Its rural setting is marked by traditional hamlets, ancient pilgrimage routes, and well-preserved examples of vernacular architecture, blending deep human history with a relatively untouched natural environment. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to Oscos-Eo for hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, and fishing in pristine rivers. Several well-maintained trails traverse the landscapes, including routes along the Eo River and through the Oscos mountains, allowing visitors to experience panoramic views and wildlife encounters.

The reserve also champions sustainable practices and community involvement, supporting local agriculture, artisanal crafts, and ecotourism as part of its conservation ethos. With mild, wet Atlantic climate conditions, the region is suitable for year-round exploration, especially in the spring and fall. Visitors seeking a less crowded, authentic natural and cultural landscape will find Oscos-Eo UNESCO Biosphere Reserve an exemplary destination.
